"Dear Friend,

It is with great pleasure that I extend to you an invitation to be present at the ceremony of the inauguration of Timor-Leste’s National Commission for UNESCO at 9:30 am on 23 April, 2009. This occasion and the associated activities outlined in the attached Program mark an historic moment in Timor-Leste’s life as a member nation of the United Nations and of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste announced its membership of the UNESCO in June 2003. Whilst political upheavals and crises in the intervening years delayed the formation of our UNESCO National Commission, we are now proud and pleased to formally invite you to join us in celebrating the beginnings of our work aimed at supporting our government in the advancement of the following priority goals:

• Curriculum development for the 9 years basic education, with emphasis upon science education,
teacher accreditation, development of science laboratory facilities, professional development for
teachers, language policy and cultural development;

• Cultural and Educational Institution Development – Establishment of a National Library and Museum;
National Music and Fine Arts Schools; Regional Cultural Centres.

• Preservation of the Natural and Cultural Heritage of Timor-Leste;

• Early Childhood Education as the first educational entry point for children, with focus upon the
importance of parental involvement in the same.

We hope that you will join us for the inauguration ceremony and also take the time to participate in our exciting “Science and Culture Festival” which will feature a Tetum Book Fair, interactive science displays, cultural events and workshops for schools. A reception for invited guests on the evening of 23 April is an opportunity to witness a unique blend of modern and traditional Timorese dance and music.

We look forward to your participation.

Yours sincerely,

Kirsty Sword Gusmão
Chair, TImor-Leste National Commission for UNESCO"
